Calgary Business Executives Interested in Outsourcing to India.

Momentum Technologies offers advice and tips for success.

December 11, 2003, Calgary, AB – Momentum Technologies, Inc., a global provider of outsourced software development services recently hosted a breakfast seminar on ”How to lower IT costs without increasing risks by outsourcing software services to India” in Calgary. It was attended by executives from local firms, keen to learn how to implement a successful “Outsourcing to India” initiative. Increasingly, corporate leaders recognize that outsourcing to India can save a company thirty to forty percent annually and a recent IDC Canada survey of executives’ notes that the top two reasons for outsourcing are access to skilled resources and improved focus on core business.  Several C-level executives from leading Calgary companies participated in the seminar.

The presentation was led by an overview of outsourcing and Momentum’s approach followed by Momentum’s CEO delivering research and background information on why companies outsource to India, and the value derived by Canadian and North American businesses that implement outsourcing strategies. This was followed by the highlight presentation delivered by Lew Turnquist, President and COO of Calgary-based VX Technologies Inc, a leader in 3D imaging technology and solutions. Lew shared his first-hand successful experience with the group, and answered many questions fielded by attendees interested in exploring how to apply those experiences to their own initiatives. “The real-world experience of satisfied customers, both speaks volumes and shows other firms how an outsourcing project can be undertaken successfully,” said Pankaj Agarwal, CEO of Momentum Technologies, Inc.

Recalling from his experience of outsourcing to India with success, Lew mentioned that some key pointers one should look for in the offshore partner are;

  • Strong customer references
  • Local project management capability
  • Strong relevant technical skills
  • Financially strong organization

Lew worked with Momentum to outsource to India while he was the President and CEO of JCommerce, a company that developed a pure Java-based retail Point-of-Sale (POS) application. Pressed to develop and release new functionality in very tight timelines and with limited resources, JCommerce engaged Momentum’s India Development Center to speed their time-to-market with new functionality at a reduced cost.  “While working with Momentum, the projects were completed 95% on-time and 100% on-budget and on spec,” said Lew when addressing the significant quantifiable benefits that JCommerce achieved by outsourcing.

Lew since led JCommerce to a successful strategic sale to another vendor in the retail POS space and is now President and COO of VX Technologies Inc.

Momentum also shared the content of a presentation delivered by other clients at a similar previous seminar held in Vancouver. One such presentation on Do’s and Dont’s of outsourcing to India highlighted the following five key tips for success:

  • Know what your firm wants or needs to outsource.
  • Ensure that the selected vendor fits with the size and goals of your firm.
  • Identify that your firm has internal resources with the necessary skills to manage an outsourcing vendor.
  • Define clear communication processes.
  • Plan for the knowledge transfer that will have to take place.
